GOULD ACADEMY
Nestled in the mountain town of Bethel in western Maine, Gould’s campus has one of the prettiest settings of any independent school in the United States. This sense of place and connection to the natural world create the backdrop, but Gould is most notably about its people and their ties to one another. Almost universally, parents, students, and alumni say that what makes the school distinctive is the strength and commitment of the faculty and their warm relationship with students.
Only six miles from Sunday River, Gould has a unique partnership with the world-class resort, providing vast opportunities for elite and recreational On Snow programs. From mountain biking, lacrosse, and soccer to skateboarding, equestrian, and ski patrol, Gould offers diverse athletic opportunities so that each student can discover or develop their passions.
Primarily a boarding school, with 225 students in grades 9-12, Gould is also a serious college preparatory institution with an excellent academic reputation and students who proudly assert that they are there first and foremost to benefit from a first-rate education. There is perhaps no other school that strikes this balance so masterfully.

HYDE SCHOOL
While many of the aspects of Hyde School appear to be very traditional—college preparatory academics, mandatory athletics, community service, strong teacher engagement with every student—the core of the Hyde experience runs much deeper than other traditional schools where an emphasis on achievement as measured by metrics like test scores and grades is the norm. Hyde reframes the conversation--and the educational experience--to focus on those things students can control and develop: their attitude, their effort, their resilience in the face of challenge, which teaches them the skills that allow them to achieve more than they ever thought they could.
More than simply buzzwords, character education and family partnership have been at the core of the Hyde School approach to a college preparatory education for over 50 years. When students depart from Hyde’s gates after graduation, the most important quality they carry with them is a set of principles: courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern. Students and their families engage with these principles throughout their time at Hyde and each student graduates having authentically developed a framework of beliefs and values that are true to who they are and to who they want to be.
Hyde is a fully boarding community with over 700 combined Maine acres including a primary campus in historic Bath, Maine and a wilderness campus in rural Eustis, Maine (Black Preserve and the Lennox Lodge). Combining the Maine wilderness with rigorous and thoughtful programs helps students in grades 9 through a postgraduate year, and their families, to truly discover their unique potential and to become the very best version of themselves.
